DIY Emergency Backpack

We never know when the next big earthquake is going to hit, and living in California, it's inevitable that it will happen. Having a plan and being prepared is the key to survival, so having an emergency bag or backpack ready to go and easily accessible will help you and/or your family make the best out of scary situation. Below are the items you should have packed and ready:

- Three gallons of water per person. It is recommended that each person has 1 gallon of water a day for 3 days.

- Three day supply of non-perishable food; Canned food, dry food, protein bars, etc. Also, pack a can opener.

- First Aid Kit, in the event that you or someone else gets injured.

- Medicine you need to take every day.

- If you have animals, pack a three day supply of food and water for them as well.

- Toiletries, this includes toilet paper, toilet wipes, anti-bacterial wipes (especially good for wounds that need cleaning), toothbrush/toothpaste, contacts if needed, feminine products, and anything else you need.

- One full spare outfit: hoodie/jacket, shirt, pants, socks, underwear, and sturdy shoes.

- A basic tool kit that includes needle nose pliers to turn off items such as water.

- Battery-powered flashlight and radio

- Extra batteries

- Blankets, especially an "emergency" blanket.

-Dust mask.

- Pocket knife.

- Waterproof matches.

- A whistle.

- Extra phone chargers.

Have a meeting with your family and make sure you all have one out of state contact person, in addition to knowing what your exit route and emergency plan is. You can never be too prepared!
